Ehnsperg

1991 — Graz

Violetta Ehnsperg is a Vienna-based artist. She studied Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under Erwin Bohatsch and graduated with honours in 2020.

In 2024, she became the first recipient of the travel fellowship awarded by the Maria Lassnig Foundation in collaboration with Secession Vienna. In 2025, she was named Up & Coming Artist by CHANEL and PARNASS art magazine.

Her practice extends beyond painting into a broader engagement with relational aesthetics, including the co-organisation of the Heilig Residency. Ehnsperg has been presented at international art fairs, and her works are held in the collection of the City of Graz as well as in several private collections.

Ehnsperg’s painting is driven by a search for openness, movement, and immediacy. Working within abstraction, she approaches the canvas as a space where perception remains fluid and meaning resists fixation. Her works are not images to be read, but fields of tension in which color, rhythm, and interruption interact.

Color plays a central role. Rather than serving a decorative function, it acts as an active, insistent force within the composition. Vivid, high-intensity hues press against one another, generating energy and instability, while areas of emptiness interrupt this density, creating pauses where perception can shift or recede. These spaces structure the image and intensify its presence.

Her process moves between control and release. Gestural marks, abrupt breaks, and layered interventions reflect a practice that remains responsive rather than predetermined. Decisions emerge through a negotiation between intention and accident, allowing moments of uncertainty to remain visible and unresolved.

While her visual language is recognizable, it avoids becoming fixed. Recurring elements arise through an ongoing engagement with visibility, fragmentation, and perception. The paintings resist closure, remaining in a state of tension shaped by contrast, disruption, and movement.

Her works demand time and attention, inviting a slower engagement in which relationships between color, form, and space continuously shift.
